Top 10 Tips for Firework Phobias

Many pets can become very distressed by loud noises such as fireworks, thunder or even a vaccuum cleaner. While the natural instinct of many owners is to try to comfort their pets until the fear has passed, there are other things to do that can help desentitise your pet to their particular fear.

Here are the the Top 10 Tips recommended by top behavioural specialists, The Company of Animals, to try and alleviate the stress:

  1. Start preparations early; don't wait for your pet to become distressed. It is easier to keep a pet happy than to calm him when stressed;
  2. Close the curtains, put the lights on, turn the television up or play music to disguise noises and flashes;
  3. Don't over-sympathise with your pet as he is likely to perceive this as approval for his fearful behaviour;
  4. Provide a "den" or a safe place for your pet to hide. This may be his crate, bed, your bedroom or even the car;
  5. Engage him in energetic exercise throughout the day so that he is physically tired and more likely to sleep through the evening;
  6. Toys stuffed with treats or chews can be a useful distraction;
  7. Try to maintain your usual routine as familiarity will maintain confidence;
  8. Use an appeasing pheromone spray or diffuser, available from our practices, as the Firework season draws closer;
  9. Be calm yourself. Pets (particularly dogs) look to their owner for direction; if you are stressed, he is more likely to be stressed;
  10. Start a longer term behaviour modification programme for your dog so that he may cope better next year! Clix produce a Noises and Sounds CD with Training Guide that is a proven technique for retraining more confident attitudes to everyday noises, especially fireworks.
