Meet the team

Dr. Robert Dorward

Veterinary Surgeon & Partner

I graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2016 and I have worked in small animal practice since then – in and around Newcastle. I have a special interest in complex small animal medicine cases and enjoy the challenges that a day in practice provides – no two days are the same!

I am originally from Newcastle – so naturally in my spare time I enjoy exploring our beautiful coastline and the amazing countryside we have on our doorstep. I’ve always said there is no place in the world like the North East of England – I love it!

I am really looking forward to meeting all of the animals we have in Bedlington – and treating them all like one of our extended Vets4Pets family.

Laurie Maddox

Partner & Registered Veterinary Nurse

From a young age I had a vested interest in animals, namely horses as I competed at local and national level in show jumping and even achieved qualification to Horse of the Year show at Wembley. My love of animals continued and I went on to study at Bishop Burton College where I attained an Advanced Diploma in Equine and Business Studies whilst also achieving BHSAI teaching qualification. Having run a successful business providing equine services combined with competing and teaching I decided to return to college studying Veterinary Nursing, qualifying in 2008 as a Registered Veterinary Nurse. I enjoy the practical element of my job and have recently improved my competency by completing a course in surgical nursing. I am also a clinical coach, training and mentoring students in practice. I have a Dalmatian dog Ruby, a cat Minxy and three horses Mollie, Cookie and Poppy. My spare time is spent with my family, my husband and little girl Amelia and my little boy Fletcher. We enjoy days at the beach, bike rides, countryside walks and foreign holidays.

Joanna Calver

Veterinary Surgeon

Joanna has wanted to be a vet from a very early age and qualified from Glasgow Vet School in 1995. After an initial year in rural Wales doing mainly farm work, she then started working in small animal practice in various locations over the years and moved to the North East 4 years ago.

She enjoys all aspects of being a general practitioner and has a special interest in Western Veterinary Acupuncture which she uses alongside conventional medicine to treat her patients, usually those with chronic pain but it can also be helpful in many other conditions.

She has 2 terriers, Ruby and Peggy, and enjoys exploring the beautiful beaches and forests of Northumberland with them.

Registered Veterinary Nurse

I have always wanted to work as a Veterinary Nurse since being 3 year old after watching Animal Hospital! I began studying a diploma in Animal Management at Kirkley hall campus. I then began my training at North Tyneside Vets4Pets and enrolled into college to gain a Level 3 Veterinary Nursing certificate. I qualified in 2013 and currently working towards a Level 4 Certificate in Emergency and Critical Care.

I enjoy hand rearing kittens and have owned six hand rears over the years. I currently have one of my hand rear kittens Sully and a rescue cat Prinny, I also have a dog named Bugsy and two ponies called Copper and Scarlett. I have just recently came back from maternity to work at Bedlington Vets4Pets and am thoroughly enjoying it. I enjoy spending my spare time with my daughter and my partner.

Helen Kane

Registered Veterinary Nurse

I joined Vets4Pets Bedlington at the start of April 2016, a couple of days after the practice opened. I have really enjoyed meeting all of the new clients and their pets and love seeing our regular dogs who pop in on their daily walks! I always wanted to become a vet when growing up but unfortunately, didn’t get the grades. Following on from A levels, I started working at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency doing surveillance work. After 5 and a half years, I decided that I wanted to work in practice and thought veterinary nursing would be ideal. I qualified in March 2015 and love working as a Registered Veterinary Nurse. At home I have one moggie called Jack, 3 Norwegian Forest Cats called Honey, Freya and Mr Darcy and one crazy Labrador cross Cocker Spaniel called Saffi. In my spare time I enjoy walking, baking, and photography.

Amanda Murphy

Veterinary Care Assistant

I am currently the Veterinary Care Assistant for Vets4Pets Bedlington and loving every minute of it. I then hope to go on to start my training to become a veterinary nurse.

I have always had a passion for animals and knew I wanted to work with them from an early age. I have grown up with a range of animals such as: dogs, cats, rabbits, gerbils, snakes, budgies, fish, tortoises, hamsters and guinea pigs.

I currently have 2 Yorkshire terriers called Missy-Bling and Pebbles. Missy is an absolute diva and Pebbles is a complete an utter baby. I also have 2 budgies called Eric and Ernie.

In my spare time I like to bake twice a week, draw and paint pictures for my 14 nieces and nephews of their favourite characters. I compete in clay pigeon shooting competitions and I am currently teaching myself British sign language.

I have had a love of animals for as long as I can remember. When I was younger & living with my parents we always had horses & ponies, so I spent most of my time growing up, enjoying their company.

My husband, two daughters & myself have had various animals over the years, including fish, hamsters, guinea pigs & rabbits. We had Murphy our gorgeous Cavalier King Charles spaniel for 13 & a half years too. When we sadly lost Murphy a couple of years ago, my daughters desperately wanted to get a puppy, so we now have Amber, another beautiful little Cavalier. She makes us all laugh every day!

I worked at Sunderland Vets4Pets when it first opened in 2008 & I was there for just under five years. I absolutely loved working there & met some amazing people & animals. I then moved jobs to work with my husband, which I did for approximately 4 & a half years.

A visit to my local Vets4Pets in Bedlington with Amber for her annual booster this summer, resulted in me being offered a job as receptionist. I am so happy to be here & although I know a few of our lovely clients & their pets already, I can’t wait to meet everyone else who will come in to see us in the future!

In our spare time, my family & I love cooking, going on long walks, eating out & enjoying relaxing holidays together.

Client Services Manager

I have always been an animal lover and interested in the Veterinary profession. Growing up my house was never free from animals and I was often known to bring any strays I found home, including the odd injured pigeon. I have always owned animals since moving out and currently have 2 horses, Gem and Oscar and my fabulous little dog Jed. I took a long career break to raise my family of 4 girls but I’m now ready for a new personal challeng...e. In my free time I like nothing more than tacking up my horses and going for a ride to blow away the cobwebs. Any other spare time is spent with my family who are my world I have and amazing husband Andrew and 4 gorgeous girls Tamara, Elissa, Imogen and Lydia, we love movies, board games, sunshine filled holidays, going for food and just generally spending time together.
