Pain is the most common reason for seeking acupuncture. Usually this is pain associated with arthritis, but it can also be used for treating muscle strains, or pain secondary to disc disease and bony changes of the spine. Acupuncture is also used for pain following orthopaedic or spinal surgery.
When an animal has been compensating for pain they often shift their weight onto other limbs, which can cause further muscle tension and fatigue. Acupuncture can help reduce muscle 'knots' to allow a quicker return to normal function. Functional conditions such as constipation or urinary disorders in cats and irritable bowel type problems in dogs may also respond to acupuncture.
