Meet the Leeds vet team

John Davies Riand BVMS MRCVS GPCert(SAP) & Hilary Davies Riand BVMS MRCVS

Veterinary Surgeons & Practice partners

We both qualified from Glasgow University in 2001. We initially worked on the Foot and Mouth Epidemic, based in Ripon, and then went into mixed practice near John's home town of Sudbury in Suffolk. After a year of this we decided to see the world and work as locum veterinary surgeons as we went. This gave us a wealth of experience, not only in challenging medical and surgical cases, but working with animals and people from many different walks of life. Looking after donkeys in Mexico, and stray dogs in Thailand certainly made us realize how privileged we are to have the standard of veterinary care that the United Kingdom can offer.

We settled in Yorkshire in 2004, having fallen in love with the countryside and the people during our time helping farmers during the Foot and Mouth crisis. John became a partner in Wakefield Vets4Pets in 2006, and left to start up Leeds Vets4Pets in 2010.

We both like all aspects of general practice and love the varied interaction with all of our patients and clients. However John's main interest is Surgery and he will be completing his Surgical Certificate over the next 3 years. It`s likely that if your pet needs a broken leg fixing it will be John that performs the operation. Hilary's main interest is medical work ups, especially complicated cases!

At home, we enjoy family time with our 2 young boys, and our little black and white 12 year old crossbreed Mali (who you may see scamper in behind us when we come to work).

Leeds started with just Lauren (now head nurse), Lesa and John, with Hilary covering Saturday mornings. Now we are a flourishing 5 vet, 6 nurse, 3 receptionist family run practice and we will always endeavor to provide the best Veterinary care in Leeds. And yes Lauren, Lesa and little old us are still here, just now joined by our ever expanding veterinary family.

Veterinary Surgeon

I graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2009. After a short stint working in London I moved up to Yorkshire with my wife and started working for Leeds Vets4Pets straight away. I left in late 2015 to travel the world with my wife visiting India, South East Asia and Australasia. After arriving back I settled in to a new job in Huddersfield which couldn’t compare to my work here so I decided to rejoin the team in February 2017.

I love interacting with both clients and patients alike and carry interests in general surgery, ultrasound and physiotherapy into my job. I will be starting a Surgical certificate in the near future to help in my daily work.

Out of work I find sport a great release from the daily commute. I partake in team sports and compete in triathlons against John (and others of course). My canine buddy of many years Tiernan keeps me company on my training runs along with many walks in the great Yorkshire countryside. Whilst resting at home I snuggle up to my new baby daughter and cat called Seῆor Worm III.

Veterinary Surgeon

I qualified from Liverpool University in 2001. Initially I worked in mixed practice treating "All Creatures Great and Small" including dairy cows, sheep, dogs, cats and horse. After two years I decided to focus down my clinical work to small animals so I could improve my knowledge and skills in one area.

In 2010 I decided to further my study and attained the Certificate in Small Animal Surgery. Having worked at various practices in the Yorkshire area I joined Vets4Pets Leeds In November 2015 as a locum vet. I enjoyed working here so much I decided to make it my permanent home! My main clinical interests are surgery, particularly soft tissue surgery, ultrasound and ophthalmology. I also enjoy the challenge and rewards getting to bottom of those tricky cases and seeing my patients recover and the joy this gives to their owners.

I enjoy the type of travelling that broadens the mind and have volunteered as a visiting veterinarian at both WVS India training centre for vets in surgery and at a Peruvian rescue centre for street dogs. Out of work my hobbies include walking (sometimes long distances!), running, cooking, Spanish and meditation.

Veterinary Surgeon

I graduated from the University of Bristol in 1996, having also obtained a degree in Pharmacology. I then worked in mixed practice for five year before spending a year working and travelling in Australia – where I loved being involved in treating the native wildlife.

In 2002 I moved to Leeds with my husband Fergus, and have worked for small animal practices and charities in Yorkshire ever since. My particular areas of interest are ophthalmology, emergency and critical care, animal welfare education, and rabbit and small mammal medicine.

I have two school aged children (Anna and Archie), two dogs (Jimmy the Jack Russell and Alvin the bull lurcher), two gerbils and a goldfish! In my spare time I like walking my dogs, playing the cornet, socialising and reading.

RVN Qualified Veterinary Nurse and Head Nurse

I have worked at Leeds Vets4Pets since it opened in July 2010. The best part of the job is nursing animals back to full health following their illnesses and surgeries. This allows me to build great relationships with clients and their pets. I have a particular interest in feline behaviour and am currently working on my ISFM Diploma in Feline Medicine.

At the moment, I have two cats, a handsome tabby called Chelios and a sulky black & white moggy named Mrs Norris, and two female guinea pigs named Lion and Bambi.

RVN Qualified Veterinary Nurse

I started my career with animals within a grooming and boarding establishment for 2 years whilst completing an Animal Care apprenticeship. I started working for Vets4Pets in 2013 as a Student Veterinary Nurse and qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2015. I'm currently studying for a certificate in emergency and critical care.

I genuinely enjoy everyday as a nurse as the day is always varied with different cases, there's always something new to learn and a different patient to care for.

At home I have a 1 year old cat called Benny T and I enjoy walking, reading and attending music events. I am also trying to learn the ukulele.

RVN Qualified Veterinary Nurse

I qualified as a Veterinary Nurse and joined the team at Vets4Pets Leeds in 2012. I have particular interests in dentistry and caring of elderly cats. For me, veterinary nursing is very rewarding and such an enjoyable career in so many ways.

I'm also a clinical coach and support our student nurses through their training. I have a gorgeous dog called Diego. Outside of work I enjoy walking in the Yorkshire Dales and attending music events.

I enjoy travelling and am looking forward to spending time away after refurbishing my house last year.

Lesa Jackson

I started working for Vets4Pets in July 2010 when we opened. I previously worked for a bank in their call centre, this job is so much better. I currently have no pets at home but thousands when I come to work.

My spare time is for family and friends and I also love movies, reading, knitting and on occasions, baking.

Jane Barrett

With a passion for animals and a particular interest in conservation, I left my career in the tourism industry in Cornwall, and in 2010 completed a National Diploma in Animal Management at Bridgwater College in Somerset. Since returning to Leeds I’ve been an active volunteer at Dogs Trust, and love helping out on their fundraising days. I started working for Leeds Vets4Pets in May 2017 and really enjoy it. No day is ever the same and seeing pets go home happy and healthy is really rewarding. In my spare time I enjoy walking, swimming, travelling (especially New Zealand), attending music events and cake decorating in which I have won several international awards. Not forgetting spending time with my gorgeous cat, Bella.

After a couple of years of travelling I decided to start my career in animal care. I joined Vet4Pets Leeds in August 2016 and find it very interesting to get an overview into all aspects of pet care.

When I was younger we had family rabbits in Germany, called Nicky and Kruemel, but since living in a city I am still waiting for the right opportunity to own another pet. I enjoy being surrounded every day by animals and it is good to see when they leave the practice all happy and healthy.

Trainee Veterinary Nurse

I am Student Veterinary Nurse and have been studying since September 2016. The job here at Vets4Pets is great; no day is ever the same and I get the opportunity to meet a variety of animals and work on many different cases. I am very lucky to work with such a lovely group of people. I love seeing the bond that owners have with their pets. In the past I have done work experience on a farm during lambing season which was brilliant, as well as volunteering in several veterinary practices which was a fantastic introduction to veterinary work.

I have always had an interest in animals and my first pet was a hamster and there have been several of those along the way.

During my free time I like to ski, cycle, go to the gym and socialise.

Ruby McTough

Trainee Veterinary Nurse

I am Student Veterinary Nurse at Leeds Vets4Pets. I was born and brought up in Kenya and have always been surrounded by wildlife. It was here that I first engaged with my desire to work with animals as well as taking care of my 6 beautiful dogs.

I have worked voluntarily with the KSPCA (the Kenya Society for the Protection of Animals) and undertook a internship in America working for a small animal practice. I love all animals, especially dogs and I am looking forward to learn more about canine behaviour.

When I am not at the practice I enjoy keeping fit and healthy, whether it’s at the gym or frolicking around the Yorkshire dales!
