Ophthalmology

Whats involved with Ophthalmology?

Slit Lamp

A slit lamp is a handheld device made up of a single high intensity light beam coupled with a microscope. It focuses a thin sheet of light onto the surface and front compartments of the eye to highlight any abnormalities. It provides a very magnified view of these structures to allow diagnosis of many eye diseases.

Tonopen

A tonopen is a device used to measure the pressure within the eye. Local anaesthetic is applied to the eye and the device is placed gently on the surface of the eye. The pressure within the eye is calculated and displayed on the device monitor. It is very important to measure the eye pressure in certain eye diseases so that correct treatment can be begun as soon as possible, especially when there is a concern over glaucoma (high eye pressure) that can result in pain and blindness.
