Mark Smith JVP Wolverhampton

Mark Smith BVM&S CertVR CertSAS MRCVS

Veterinary Surgeon and Practice Owner

I became a vet quite simply because I love animals. After five years at the Edinburgh Vet School I graduated in 1990 and joined a mixed veterinary practice for four years dealing with cats, dogs, horses and farm animals. During in this time I gained certification in Radiology. In 1994 I took up a position as resident in a Small Animal Surgery at Glasgow Vet School for two years and gained certification in Soft Tissue and Orthopaedic Surgery in cats and dogs.

In 1996 I returned to work in practice at a large vets in Leicester and for the last ten years have been the lead referral surgeon in their hospital, accepting referrals from within the practice and from other vets in Leicestershire and the Midlands.

Outside work my interests include walking my dog Sam, spending time with my family and astronomy and astrophysics. Worried that with age my brain might give up the ghost I started a degree in astrophysics from the Open University and graduated in 2009.

I am excited to become a Joint Venture Partner because it gives me a chance to be my own boss and set the standards of care that I would expect for my own dog Sam, a 7 and a half year old black Labrador.

I have two black cats called Wispa and Rolo (who only has one eye due to an injury) as well as a border collie called Abby and collie cross called Rosie that both compete in flyball with a local team. Due to missing contact with clients and pets, I decided to return to work as a veterinary receptionist. In my spare time I enjoy crosswords, gardening and decorating.

I am currently on maternity leave but I am usually one of the part-time receptionists who make up the team at our Wolverhampton practice. I have worked in a receptionist role for almost two years now and I thoroughly enjoy my role at Vets4Pets, as I love meeting new clients and their lovely pets as well as seeing the regular ones! I plan to progress to become a Veterinary Nurse in the future as I have always wanted to work with animals, as I believe in all of them having a happy and fulfilled life. I don't have much spare time for hobbies outside of work due to being on maternity leave and having a very energetic puppy to care for but I love long walks over the park with my beagle, Ralph and travelling when I have to opportunity.
