Something to chew on

Take a look in any pet shop or supermarket and you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting food for your cat. So what should you go for? There isn’t a single correct answer as it depends on factors like your cat’s age, its size, how active it is and so on. Follow our advice and you should have a better idea of what to buy – and don’t forget to always leave out fresh, clean water.

Different ages, different food

In its first year of life, your cat is growing fast so needs a high energy food while older cats who are less mobile have very different requirements. Most cat foods will indicate which age groups they are intended for, so pay attention to what it says on the packaging and choose a food that’s right for your pet.

Moving around

Most kittens are always on the move, but as they grow up, they start to have very different characteristics. Some adult cats are very active – particularly if they have plenty of outdoor space available – whereas others like to snooze all day. The amount of food you give should depend on how much your cat moves around – there should be a guide on the food packaging.

Not too much

Whether you choose dry food, wet food or a combination of the two, most commercial cat foods are complete diets containing all the energy and nutrition your pet needs. If you give it too much, your cat will quickly gain weight which can lead to a range of health problems such as diabetes. So be careful - and keep an eye on the treats too.
