Eat it all up

Food is life’s fuel, and that’s as true for dogs as it is for any other animal – or human for that matter! There is an overwhelming choice of dog foods available to buy, but by taking account of your dog’s lifestyle and breed, you will be able to narrow down the options and make an informed choice about the diet your dog needs.

What to think about

There are lots of factors you need to take into consideration when thinking about what to feed your dog. Most commercial foods are complete diets, which means they deliver the full range of nutrients your pet needs, but read the packaging carefully as you need to allow for your dog’s breed, age, size, energy levels and medical history before choosing.

Age matters

With so much growing ahead of it, a puppy’s nutritional needs are very different to those of an older dog. Most commercially available dog foods will indicate the appropriate age range on the packaging, so make sure you match your own pet’s age to the type of food you buy. You can usually choose between food for puppies, for adult dogs, and for senior animals.

Not too much

An overweight dog is at risk from a range of health problems including diabetes, joint damage, breathing difficulties and heart disease among others. It is very important that you stick to the feeding guidelines on the food packaging. It will help if you know how much your dog weighs, as this will affect the quantity of food you should give. Ask Vets4Pets if you need help weighing your dog.
