Alisha MacKinnon

Head Registered Veterinary Nurse and Clinical Lead

Read Alisha MacKinnon bio

Alisha graduated in 2013 with a first class honours degree and she also won the university medal. She has worked at the practice as a nurse since graduating and was promoted to head nurse in 2021 and became clinical lead at the start of this year. She is a clinical coach for training students and has a certificate in exotic nursing.
She has 3 gerbils currently and has owned guinea pigs, hamsters and chinchillas in the past and is passionate about small furries which is what encouraged her to do her exotics certificate a few years ago. We don't see a lot of exotics at the practice but for those we do see (rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents mainly) Alisha runs specific clinics for them to discuss with owners their range of nutritional, environmental, health and husbandry needs. She is also very passionate about animal welfare in general across all species, behaviour / training and preventative medicine.
Alisha's hobbies are pretty varied and she is known for always being up to something! She is a qualified scuba diver, does a lot of hiking/hillwalking, running, cycling, paddleboarding, wild swimming, rock climbing/bouldering, Clubbercise and going to the gym - anything that keeps her busy and active. To chill out she also enjoys relaxing in a sauna, watching the telly, reading a book or scrolling through Tiktok videos for hours on end and wondering where the day has gone!
Statement from Alisha:
I love working for Airdrie Vets4Pets as we are such a close team who work well together. We will socialise outside of work, have all become good friends and although the job can be very stressful at times, we all support each other and we have lots of amazing clients and patients. I love that all staff members are included in making up the practice protocols and every member of the team is valued. We have regular meetings and are always striving to improve our standards and services. We all do our best to create a happy working environment whilst also still providing a top class service to our clients and patients.

What is your favourite animal and why? I'd probably need to pick dogs. I think it would be a very sad world without them! I'm very fond of orcas and otters too. What pets do you have and what are their names? I have 3 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. My oldest is Izzie, who is very spoiled being our only girl. She was my first agility dog and we competed at Crufts 2014 together which was a huge achievement! George is our middle child and has a bit of a quirky personality. We started competing in agility last year and he's way too fast for me to handle. Charlie is the baby of the family and loves to wind up his sister. He's just started his training and is coming on great! What's the best pet name that you've ever come across? It's probably bad to say my own.. but I think George the Cavalier is pretty cool. What is your favourite famous animal? Hedwig, Pigwidgeon, 101 Dalmations puppies, Lady from Lady&theTramp, Eeyore, Charlotte from Charlotte's Web.. it's too hard to decide on one. What's the best aspect of working with Vets4Pets? Seeing all of the pets who come to visit us, as well as meeting staff and clients who are crazy about their animals.
