Stephen McLean

Stephen graduated from University College Dublin in 2001. He initially spent two years in mixed practice before transitioning to a small animal hospital, where he worked for seven years. In 2011 Stephen founded Vets for Pets Bangor with a small team and the clinic has since grown and expanded. Stephen obtained his Certificate in Ophthalmology in 2009 and was awarded Royal College Advanced Practitioner status in Ophthalmology in 2015. Outside of work Stephen is passionate about cycling and running and is known for his expertise as a BBQ enthusiast. Stephen is kept busy by his family which consists of his wife, three daughters and his dog Cobi.

Shona graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2013 and shortly thereafter began working in a busy mixed Practice at the foot of the Mournes. Shona joined the Vets for Pets Bangor team in April 2017 and has been an integral part of the team ever since. Shona has a keen interest in internal medicine, cardiology and ultrasound. Outside of work she enjoys exploring Tollymore Forest Park with her dogs, Hamish and Bertie. In 2024 Shona and her husband Fabian welcomed their son Faelin and in 2026 they celebrated the arrival of their daughter Aodha. Shona also became Joint Partner in Vets for Pets Bangor alongside Stephen in 2025, it's safe to say she's had a very busy few years!

Cormac Mackle

Cormac graduated from the University of Surrey in 2021 and spent three years gaining valuable experience in a mixed veterinary practice. In 2024 he joined the Vets for Pets Bangor team, where he continues to pursue his passion for general practice with a particular interest in surgery. From day one Cormac settled seamlessly into the team bringing both skill and enthusiasm to his role. Outside of work Cormac enjoys hiking and staying active. While he currently doesn’t have any four-legged companions at home it’s only a matter of time before a ginger tom cat joins his family.

Rachel qualified on 2013 from CAFRE (Greenmount Campus) and joined the Vets for Pets Bangor team in February 2015 as a Registered Veterinary Nurse, she then took on the role of Head Nurse in 2018.  Rachel loves all aspects of her job but has a keen interest in the management side of her role. In 2021 Rachel completed a nursing certificate in small animal behaviour, this helped us as a practice implement policies that better reflect the welfare of animals fears and anxieties meaning a more stress-free treatment approach. Rachel has two beautiful daughters at home Emily and Anna alongside her dog Calie and 2 cats Trevor and Joey.

Lisa qualified in 2015 from CAFRE Greenmount Campus and joined the Vets for Pets Bangor team in June 2020 on what was initially intended to be a maternity cover position, however she became a permanent member of the team shortly after joining. Lisa has a particular interest in theatre with a special focus on anaesthetics. A lifelong animal lover Lisa has two dogs of her own Belle and Eddie. In her free time she enjoys hiking in the Mourne Mountains and cooking up a storm in the kitchen. In 2023 Lisa and her partner Stuart welcomed their daughter Amelia followed by the arrival of their son Alfie in 2024.

Sophie joined our team in August 2021 as a Receptionist and went on to become an RVN in 2024.  Sophie has three dogs Bramble, Val and Nova and two cats called Walter and Beans.  Sophie is known for her compassionate nature, she has a keen interested in neonates and is often busy hand-rearing animals to give them a strong start in life. In addition, Sophie has two horses Echo and Izzy. Her love for animals big and small is evident in everything she does.

Toni graduated from Harper Adams University in 2018 and gained invaluable experience at another veterinary practice before joining the Vets for Pets team in 2024. Initially covering a maternity position Toni quickly became a beloved member of our team and we’re thrilled to have her as a permanent part of the team. Toni has a particular passion for anaesthetics and complementary therapies, always striving to provide the best care for every patient. At home she shares her life with her two cats Noodle and Leia and has a keen interest in exotics with three snakes and a gecko as part of her extended family. Outside of work Toni loves attending music gigs and expressing her creativity through art.

Lisa has worked at Vets for Pets Bangor since it first opened in February 2011 so she is just part of the furniture now. Lisa started off as a Receptionist then trained as a Student Veterinary Nurse and is now the Practice Manager. Lisa loves all animals and has always had pets.   Lisa is Staffy girl at heart and currently has a puppy called Miesha with her husband Mark who keeps her very busy.  Outside of of work she enjoys big forest walks, socialising with friends, movies, UFC and loves spending time in her garden.

Emma joined the Practice in 2023 and is part of our reception team, she is recently back from maternity leave and is loving being a first time mum to Lottie. She has always cared for animals and their welfare and growing up there was always a pet or two in the house. The most rewarding part of her job is seeing patients being nursed back to health by the team. In her free time she loves going to the cinema and attending concerts.

Sophie joined the Practice in 2025 and has quickly become a valued member of our team. She has settled seamlessly bringing with her a positive, bubbly and approachable personality that both colleagues and clients appreciate. Outside of work Sophie has a strong passion for equestrian sport and competes in show jumping classes with her horse Kamiro. She has grown up surrounded by both dogs and cats which has helped shape her love for animals and her commitment to their care and wellbeing. Sophie hopes to welcome a dog of her own in the future with her dream breed being a Golden Retriever.

We’re locally owned and run by Stephen McLean. We opened our doors in 2011 and since then we have had the absolute pleasure of welcoming and treating thousands of wonderful pets.

From regular examinations and preventative care to surgery and x-rays, you’ll find our friendly vets in Bangor are ready to deal with any pet problem.

Supported by the latest technology, Bangor veterinary practice in Co.Down features a lab, pharmacy, digital x-ray and ultrasound, with on-site parking for your convenience.

Stephen McLean MVB CertVopthal, MRCVS, and is an Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Ophthalmology. We offer a dedicated ophthalmology service for our clients and we welcome cases referred to us by another veterinary surgeon.  Services include full ophthalmic examination including use of specialised equipment such as tonometry, slit lamp biomicroscopy and ultrasonography, as well as more advanced treatment and surgery for conditions such as corneal ulcers, eyelid lumps and prolapse of the nictitans gland (‘cherry eye’) and entropion (inward folding of the eyelids) and cataract surgery.
