Dermot McInerney

Clinical Director & Veterinary Surgeon

BVSc MRCVS

Read Dermot McInerney bio

Dermot joined the Vets for Pets Newtownards team as Clinical Director in the summer of 2023 after spending 6 months with the practice as a locum. Before this, he graduated as a vet from the University of Bristol in 2017 and remained in England to complete an 18 month internship before returning back home to Northern Ireland.

The complexity of veterinary medicine now means that some degree of speciality is needed to continue to improve animal welfare and provide a high standard of care for our patients.  With this in mind, Dermot is currently undertaking a postgraduate certificate in small animal surgery and is due to complete this in 2025.

Dermot also has a real interest in mental health and teambuilding and spoke at the Titanic Vet show conference in 2023 on improving wellbeing in veterinary teams.

In his free time, Dermot like to spend time with his wife Helen (also a vet) and his two crazy cocker spaniels, Charlie and Fergus, as well as playing and watching sports

Emma graduated from the University of Surrey in 2022 and couldn’t wait to move back home. Her first job was in a small animal emergency setting and she since made the move to Vets For Pets in Newtownards to allow more time for individual patient care. In particular, she enjoys neurology and cardiology and is pursuing further education in cardiac scanning.

She has two dogs, a 14 year old terrier, which leaves a special place in her heart for the older patients, and a 1 year old working cocker spaniel, which she likes to run long distance with at the weekends!

Vets for Pets Newtownards, is here to welcome you and your pets into our professional, friendly and newly refurbished veterinary practice. Located on the Portaferry Road, we are easily accessible from both the Newtownards area and the Peninsula with plenty of onsite parking, so you don’t have to worry about making it to your appointments on time!

We have grown as a team over the last 7 years and we now have a team of 4 vets, 5 nurses and 3 receptionists who are enthusiastic about all things pets! They will ensure that your visit with us is exceptional from start to finish. Whether you’re welcoming a new puppy or kitten, or saying goodbye to a beloved pet, our caring and compassionate team will make sure to look after you.

Routine consultations with our vets start from £40 with follow-up appointments charged at a reduced fee of £35 plus any medication or treatment you may require. For a specific price for any medical or surgical treatment, please contact the clinic directly.

We also closed for everything, other than emergency appointments, between 1.30 and 2.00pm each day to allow our reception team to get their lunch.

As a practice we really want to do the best for our patients, and our spacious bright reception area is designed so we have separate cat and dog friendly areas for you and you pets to wait in. One of our nurses is also undertaking extra training to make sure we maintain our ISFM accreditation as a cat-friendly-clinic and make our feline patients experience as stress free as possible.

We have all the usual equipment you would expect in a well-established veterinary practice with 3 consultation rooms, pharmacy, laboratory, surgical theatre, dental equipment, ultrasound and digital x-ray to enable us to look after your pets in the most effective way possible.

As a practice, we are really focused on improving animal welfare and providing a high quality care to our patients. To enable us to do this, the practice closes for a morning four times a year so we can undertake staff training and improve the services we can offer. Don’t worry though, there will always be a vet available to treat your pet for any emergencies you might have.

If you would like to register your pet with us or book an appointment, please contact our friendly reception team on 028 9182 4200.
